Pirates, Sea Creatures, the Beach, and of course, Disney
February 28, 2012 at 5:09 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentIt seems that whenever we have friends and family to stay with us during their vacations, we eat and spend like we’re on vacation, too. But that’s ok – I can’t even remember the last time James and I took a real vacation, anyway. (Actually, I can. San Francisco in April 2008. Four years ago, sigh.) Another perk of living in a vacation destination. Our friend Travis came to stay for a long weekend. Liam calls him “Un-tle Travis” because as friends go, he’s like a brother to James.
We kicked off Friday with a trip to Sea World. We couldn’t leave without seeing the Dolphin Show and the underwater dolphin viewing, at Liam’s insistence. We had a great lunch at Shark’s Underwater Grill, this time not sitting quite so close to the shark tank as we had before, but enjoying the views nonetheless. We pooped out before the 4:30 Shamu show. Maybe next time.
After an afternoon of rest (in which Liam actually requested to come to the Y with me. Though he still cried a little when I left him at the day care), we had an entertaining dinner at Pirate’s Dinner Adventure — as you probably guessed it, a pirate-themed dinner theater. At the entrance we posed for a photo. Liam, of course, refused to wear a pirate hat. And he wasn’t sure what to make of the pre-dinner theatrics, which were held in an open area where parents could purchase pirate swag for their kids and, non-coincidentally, purchase alcoholic drinks for themselves at the bar. Once the pretense for the show was set up – the island governor’s daughter kidnapped by a pirate and his haughty crew – we all filed in to sit in our color-coded sections. Each section was led by a “pirate in-training” and throughout the show they would be put through pirate challenges in which we’d root for our own pirate to win. As we cheered for our blue pirate (who had a name, I’m sure), it looked more and more apparent that he was falling for the governor’s daughter. Sure enough he leads a mutiny, recues the girl, and they live happily ever after. There were lots of sword fights, cannon-fire, and swinging from ropes, all while we dined on decently good pirate-themed fare. Liam did better than I’d feared, only wanting to leave about 10 minutes from the end, and mostly because he was getting sleepy. We’re thinking this might make a good fourth birthday activity for him, something he’d probably prefer to a party. With people.
On Sunday we headed to Cocoa Beach to enjoy some sand and surf (but no swimming, brrr!), and seafood. Travis hadn’t seen the beach since he was a kid, and I think he enjoyed it much more than he thought he would. It started to drizzle, so James and Liam waited in the car while Travis and I waded up to our knees. Befitting, since Liam thinks he’s melting every time it rains on him, and James doesn’t like getting the “outside” on him. Travis wants to come back to the beach when he visits again, and he seems to think he can convince James to come with us. At least I know Liam loves the beach when he can play in the sand. The seafood joint I found was decent, though I think we’ll try another one next time. Liam sure liked playing outside while we waited for our table!
Monday Travis and James spent a day at Hollywood Studios geeking out at the Star Wars store (getting their heads superimposed on Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, lol), and Liam did his own geeking out when we met up with them at the Cars meet and greet. Usually Liam could care less about getting his picture taken with Winnie the Pooh or a Disney princess, but when we pulled up to Mater and Lightning McQueen, Liam went bananas. He got a little shy when it was his turn to pose, but he talked about it all afternoon. Afterward we went to the car stunt show, and he was again star-struck as Lightning McQueen chased a spy car around the set. It was a short segment of the show, and Liam kept asking where Lightning McQueen had gone. Then, with a little three-year-old logic, he concluded that he’d gone to get ice cream, and we needed to get ice cream with him when this was over. Aye-aye, Liam!
Liam happily enjoyed his ice cream dinner (yes, I know, bad parents!) while James and Travis enjoyed their revoltingly sweet dino-themed drinks at the T-Rex Café at Downtown Disney. This place is always a hit with Liam.
When we weren’t out sight seeing and running poor Travis ragged (I think he’ll need a vacation from this vacation), Liam followed Uncle Travis around the house like a lost little puppy. Getting him to brush his teeth in the morning is always a battle, but when Uncle Travis brushed, Liam happily volunteered to follow suit. They played trains, cars, took a walk to see Liam’s favorite parts of the subdivision (the cul-de-sacs have usurped the gate for that title), and they even stayed up late on Monday watching Cars 2.
In a couple short weeks we’ll be hosting more vacationers, this time my in-laws. We can’t wait!
A good day
February 17, 2012 at 5:12 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentEverything is great. Everything is grand. I’ve got the whole wide world in the palm of my hand…
Right now Liam’s sitting on the potty and singing along to the Muppets soundtrack. He can just about sing the Rainbow Connection from memory, which seems pretty amazing to me. Course, everyone thinks their own kid is a genius.
Life does feel pretty grand at the moment. I made another friend today, and I’m hoping our kids will all play well together. I dropped Liam off at the Y, and he walked right in, only crying when I said bye bye. He’s been doing a lot better in his music and art class, too. Progress.
And we’re making progress on our house hunt. I got the ball rolling with a call to a realtor and to a mortgage lender for a loan pre-approval. And it looks like we’re in good shape financially to buy our first home. We might even be looking at a house this weekend right in the neighborhood I want to live in. It’s a short sale, as many houses down here are, so if we like it, it could still take awhile to process. But we’re in no hurry. Our lease isn’t up until July, and after that we can pay month-to-month. Perfect arrangement, really.
We’ve had a wonderful winter here in Florida. Not a day has gone by that we haven’t spent outside. We go on walks every night, which are beginning to feel like summer already. Oh how I love those summer nights! We’ve been going on date night at least once a month, and Orlando is really starting to feel like home.
Everything is perfect, it’s falling into place. I can’t seem to wipe this smile off my face…
Disney Date Day

It took some planning, back and forth with the babysitter’s schedule and ours, but we finally went on our Disney Date. Of course, the temperature decided to dip drastically on the day we’d picked to go. But it’s Florida, so it still got up to 50 degrees. And at least it wasn’t raining.
Bundled up and ready for fun, we headed to Hollywood Studios for an afternoon of rides Liam can’t ride and shows Liam won’t sit through. On the Aerosmith Rockin’ Rollercoaster (which I rode with Tori back in November) I very nearly lost my glasses, doh! Which totally would have sucked because they discontinued these frames and I love, love, love them. We rode a couple of tamer rides, one on the history of cinema and another special effects backlot tour. We also sat through an entertaining Indiana Jones stunt show. Oh, and of course we went on the Star Tours 3D Star Wars ride. I had been disappointed in it last time I rode it, but this time our show had Pod Racing and an underwater scene from Naboo, which I thought was way better. I still felt a little woozy with the 3D glasses, but not as bad as last time.
We ended the afternoon at the Lights, Motor, Action stunt car show, which we’d seen on a history channel special about Disney World. We knew there’d be car chases, explosions, motorcycles, and a guy lit on fire. What we didn’t know was they had added a new Lightning McQueen action sequence (pictured above). Liam would have gone BANANAS! We vowed to take him along next time we go. They also had a place where the kids could pose with Lightning McQueen and Mater, just like they do with the princesses in Magic Kingdom. Liam would totally go for that, too. He’s always telling me that Lightning McQueen is coming to our house to play.
For dinner we headed to Epcot, and I was intent on getting a nice, fat, juicy steak at Canada’s Le Cellier Steakhouse, but the attendant told us the reservation wait is 3 – 6 months. Seriously!? For a restaurant at Epcot?! Well la-dee-da! Of course, now I HAVE to eat there, so I’m going to make our reservation now for sometime in June.
James and I perused the Norwegian menu, took a ride on the goofy boat ride, and posed for a goofy picture in the gift shop. But because I had just been to lunch at Ikea on Friday, we decided to eat at Downtown Disney’s Portobello, which accepted our reservation for later in the evening. And, man oh man, did it not disappoint! I even managed to order that steak I’d been craving, and it was absolutely perfect. We ended our date night with hot chocolates at Ghiradelli, a perfect dessert for an unseasonably chilly night.
We had such a great time, but with the babysitter and pricy dinner, I think we’ll have to wait until April before we do this again. Still, I feel like we’re getting good use out of these season passes. James is planning to take a day off work so we can all go to Animal Kingdom together in March. And I just might have to take Liam to see Lightning McQueen before the spring break kids crowd the parks.

Me: Baa baa black sheep have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full…
Liam: No, no! That’s not how it goes, Mommy!
Me: Okay, you say it.
Liam: It’s two bags full. One for my master and one for my hand. And one for my butt. (grin)
Me: … (childish snort) You’re gonna kill ‘em in preschool, kiddo.
