Istanbul Travelogue: Day…uh…10

I’m writing this on the stationary at the InterCity Hotel in Frankfurt. Due to a “dirty taxi-way” (I shit you not), we were delayed departing Istanbul. James and I made a valiant effort to make it the mile and a half to our connection gate, only to get held up at a redundant security check. After painstakingly removing our laptops, turning them on, and getting scanned and patted down by hand, we raced to our gate only to see that, for once, our flight actually took off on time. We missed it by 5 minutes.

So here we are at the spartan InterCity hotel, a far cry from the five-star InterContinental in Istanbul. I suppose beggars can’t be choosers–the airline is paying for our hotel, dinner, and breakfast, and were gracious enough to give us these “stranded traveler” packs, complete with toothpaste and matching white T-shirts to sleep in. We laughed out loud when we got to our room. It screams 1988 East Germany, so much so that we half expect a black-attired Mike Myers to leap out screaming, “Touch my monkey, touch it!” I just washed my face with the “Hand, Hair and Body, All-in-One mit conditioner” in a handy dispenser by the sink. There’s one in the shower stall, too. Gotta love that German functionality.

****************

We finally made it home around 2 on Saturday. No rest for the weary–we’ve got about 12 loads of laundry to do, and only one day to finish all the packing and arrangements we planned to do in two. Here’s where “fun-time” begins. I probably won’t be posting again until we’re safely in KC. Wish us luck!
