Christmas Comes Early

Because we’re headed to Lexington for Christmas, and because Liam really doesn’t know the difference, we decided to dole out some of his gifts early. So Saturday during nap time James put together the little kitchen we got him from Ikea. My mom sewed all of this wonderful play food, and we stocked the shelves and pantries with pots, pans, cups, spatulas, wooden spoons, and empty food containers. I think his kitchen is better equipped than ours! Refreshed from his nap, he immediately set to work making a mess of the countertop, and taking little nibbles from all of the play food. We had to make a few adjustments – taking the magnets off the cabinets so they were easier to open, and giving him a boost on the bolster so he could reach the microwave and top shelves. Reminds me of when we had to put a pillow under his feet in his exersaucer because he was so short!

On Sunday he opened a present from my mom, a quilt road map she made herself, and a bag full of matchbox cars, most of which I fondly remember from my childhood. When Jill and I were little, we had a plastic map very similar to this, and we absolutely loved that thing. Played with it for hours. So using it as a template, my mom created one for Liam. She added some updates – a farmer’s market, a bike trail – and some personal touches, like the burger stand. Liam plopped right down on the quilt and started running the cars everywhere. He’s still too young to understand how the cars run on the road, but he’ll get it eventually.
